Jiva Performing Arts exists to promote and preserve the classical arts of India, specifically Indian classical music and dance. Jiva was formed in 2007 in New York City. Through innovative performances, classes, workshops, lecture demonstrations and a strong arts-in-education base, we strive to encourage the growth of the classical arts of India in the US. Jiva offers classes in classical Indian dance. Bharatanatyam dance classes are open to students of all ages and levels. Sonali brings to her classroom years of experience working in educational environments. Sonali’s teaching is hallmarked by a sincerity to pass on what she has learned from her Gurus in a traditional manner, yet with an eye for innovative methodologies. Classes focus on a holistic learning – incorporating both practical and theoretical training. Each class begins with a series of yoga asanas and conditioning exercises to prepare the body and mind for practice. Classes are conducted in group and private settings. Often more serious students will combine a group class with a private class weekly. All students have the opportunity to showcase their learning at our annual student recital, Vidyanjali, held in the spring. The highlight of the show is dance accompanied by a live Carnatic orchestra. The show is a much anticipated event, where the dancers’ performance skills, musical skills and dance skills are honed.
